A journey to visit every country in the world without Flying.

Torbjørn C. Pedersen (Thor)

Torbjørn C. Pedersen

Torbjørn Cederlöf Pedersen (Thor) was born in Kerteminde, Denmark. The family moved to Vancouver, Canada, then to Toronto, Canada, and after that to New Jersey, USA over a period of six years, before returning to Denmark in 1984 where he spent his childhood growing up in Kerteminde and Bryrup before entering business school at Silkeborg Handelsskole, Silkeborg. Thor graduated as a merchant student in 1998 and was drafted to the military later the same year, serving as a royal life guard at the royal palaces throughout Denmark. He was later a UN soldier for half a year in Eritrea and Ethiopia. Following an education in shipping and logistic the Dane worked several years abroad in Libya, Bangladesh, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, the United States and other countries. When travelling abroad, Torbjørn is nicknamed Thor.

7 years ago, he discovered that no one in the history of human kind has been to all countries in the world in one single journey without flying! So He had a crazy idea. Why shouldn’t I be the first one.

So on the 10th of October at exactly 10:10am with just a pair of shoes and a backpack with everything he owns. He left his home in Denmark and promised himself to never return home until he’s finished.

After giving up a 12-year career in shipping and logistics. And he hasn’t been home since. His mission is to visit every country in the world, without taking a single flight. He has three cardinal rules: he cannot, at any point, take a flight anywhere; he must spend a minimum of 24 hours in each country; and he cannot go back home until the very end of his journey.

Saying no to plane and he got on bus! exactly 336 Buses, 158 Trains, 25 container ships, 8 Trucks even once on a horse carriage and zero Flights!

Thor uses every mode of transportation possible except planes. He’s taken an Uber to the Wagah border, sat in a small, open boat with two strangers to get from Venezuela to Trinidad, crossed stormy seas on container boats, taken dingy trains across Africa and long bus journeys through India.

All of this while spending an average of just $20 a day traveling. $20 A Day!

What thor is doing might sound really easy on paper but the truth is it’s really difficult. He had to deal with visa problems accommodation problems spending months on board of a container ship just to get to where he wanted. And for conflict zones entering the country also means risking his life. And if that’s not enough to discourage you imagine spending 7 year on the road without a home without seeing your family without seeing your friends.

Thor adventurer known for the Once Upon a Saga project: a journey to visit every country in the world without the use of air travel.

On 10 October, 2013 at 10:10 am (10/10,10:10) Once Upon a Saga began at Dybbøl Mølle in Southern Denmark. Soon after Thor crossed into Germany by train and had, in January 2020, reached 193 of the intended 203 countries on all six inhabited continents without returning home.

He was originally expected to complete the project and return to Denmark again in 2020 after visiting his last country, the Maldives, in October 2020. However, as of April 2020, he has been stuck in Hong Kong for several months due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The long journey has earned Thor media coverage in more than 100 countries so far. Notable outlets that have covered Thor quest between 2013 and 2020 include VICE, BBC, Lonely Planet, National Geographic, Forbes, Al Jazeera, The Guardian, News.com.au, The National and ABC.

Nick Vujicic was born in Melbourne, Australia, in 1982 to Dušanka and Borislav Vujičić, Serbian immigrants from Yugoslavia.

He was born without fully formed limbs. According to his autobiography, his mother refused to see him or hold him when the nurse held him in front of her, and she and her husband went out of the hospital and vomited from seeing their son with no limbs, but they eventually accepted the condition and understood it as “God’s plan for their son.”

Originally, the toes of one of his feet were fused. An operation was performed to separate the toes so that he could use them as fingers to grab. He refers to it as his chicken drumstick.

At that time, the laws prevented Nick Vujicic from attending a public school, despite his obvious intelligence. The laws soon changed and the young nick was enrolled in school.

There were many students that did not accept him at the school and began bullying nick. He fell into depression At age eight, he contemplated suicide and even tried to drown himself in his bathtub at age ten; his love for his parents prevented him from following through.

Nick felt that his life had no value, but his parents never gave up on him. He also stated in his music video “Something More” that God had a plan for his life and he could not bring himself to drown because of this. The situation greatly improved in high school. Nick was elected Captain of MacGregor State in Queensland. He worked with the school council on fundraising events and began speaking at prayer groups.

After his high school education, Nick obtained a double bachelors degree from Griffith University in Logan, Australia, majoring in accounting and financial planning. By the time he turned 19 years old, he began his career as a motivational speaker, being able to encourage other people through this talks and sharing his testimony about how God changed his life.

Nick gradually figured out how to live a full life without limbs, adapting many of the daily skills limbed people accomplish without thinking. Nick writes with two toes on his left foot and a special grip that slid onto his big toe. He knows how to use a computer and can type up to 45 words per minute using the “heel and toe” method. He has also learned to throw tennis balls, play drum pedals, get a glass of water, comb his hair, brush his teeth, answer the phone and shave, in addition to participating in golf, swimming, and even sky-diving.

In 9 March 2002, he moved to California. In 2008 in McKinney, Texas, near Dallas, he met Kanae Miyahara. They married on February 12, 2012. The couple has two sons and two daughters, and reside in Southern California.

Nick is an anti-bullying advocate who travels the globe speaking to millions of students in partnership with Education Departments of several Governments.  Nick has created an innovative Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Curriculum called “Attitude Is Altitude,” where in he teaches students to make positive changes in their lives and their communities.
